POTTER LAKE

Located in the middle of campus and nestled quietly below the soaring Campanile on Mount Oread sits Potter Lake. Named for former Kansas State Senator Thomas M. Potter, the lake was originally created to supply water for fire protection around the growing KU campus. In it's early years the serene location provided a popular swimming spot, and James Naismith even organized several “regatta-style races” on the lake and built a seven-hole golf course around it.

Today the lake offers an essential spot for students seeking peace and quiet amid the hustle and bustle of college life. And in 2008 students founded the Potter Lake Project to promote restoration and preservation of one of the last remaining green spaces on campus. The historic stone bridge, pump house and dance pavilion are some of the nearby features now supported annually by KU Facilities Planning & Development.
